Book Review: Forbidden Mind, by Kimberly Kinrade

Forbidden Mind is a gripping story of teens in a seemingly inescapable, but dire situation.

Sam reads minds. She's been raised in a special school for kids with paranormal gifts, and she has never met any of her family. After they are trained, these teens are rented out, usually to very rich clients, to do tasks for which they are suited. Usually for Sam, this involves spying (and of course reading minds.)

When the teens are 18, they are allowed to leave the school and pursue their own paths, attend college, and live a normal life. Sam will be 18 in a few weeks. When she returns from her last assignment, she sees something she shouldn't. A boy, strapped to a gurney, being brought to the school clinic. He cries out for help (in her mind.) This is unusual, because all of the students at the school are brought there when they are very young.

Soon Sam realizes she can communicate telepathically with Drake, the boy on the gurney. He has been brought to the school against his will, and is being drugged to keep him from using his powers -- super strength. And he can also read minds, like Sam. Together they discover that all is not as it seems at the school, and they are determined to do something about it, but how?

This is a short book that never quits. It has a scary premise, and the teens are very resourceful and creative in their attempts to discover the truth and escape. My only complaint is with the ending. The book ended at a good "stopping point" but that's all it was. A chapter ending. It felt very abrupt, and I would have liked a denouement.

I enjoyed the ride. It's an interesting premise, well-told. I'm beginning to become attached to the main characters, but that's one of the problems I have with shorter stories--I need more time. Even the villains could have been more villainous, if given more pages. I'd be interested in reading more about Sam and Drake, I just think there could have been more about them in this installment.

Book Review: The Girl of Fire and Thorns, by Rae Carson

Most unexpectedly, I loved The Girl of Fire and Thorns. Why unexpected? Well, I'm picky about my fantasies, and when I found out a girl had a jewel embedded in her stomach, well, I was skeptical.

I loved Elisa. She changed from a winey, self-centered princess to a smart, brave, and determined queen. And the transformation was very entertaining.

Elisa is chosen, and at her christening, a godstone was placed in her navel. This happens to one person every century. Along with this stone, comes a prophecy that Elisa will be very powerful. She is also to marry Alejandro, King of Joya d'Arena. Her father has promised troops to help fight an inevitable war with the Invierne, if the king marries Elisa. So, she gets dragged to this new land, with new people and unfamiliar customs. And, no one knows she is the new queen. Elisa isn't powerful, beautiful, strong, or smart, at least in her own eyes. She's overweight, and the reader never forgets this, because Elisa is so self-conscious about it.

Before she even gets settled in her new kingdom she ends up getting kidnapped, and this begins her tremendous transformation. Because of her hardships, she becomes strong. Because she finds out the true story of her captors, she uses her knowledge of war to become a real force in the fight against the Invierne.

At one point, I realized, uh-oh there's going to be a love triangle. But this never really develops very far--and the way Carson handles it is unique -- I don't want to say more than that.

Elisa is very devout and prays all the time. However, this book isn't preachy. I see quite often that religion in books bothers some people. It really doesn't bother me. It's just like real life; there are many people with diverse beliefs that we meet along the way. So, you should know these people, at least some of them, are Godly, in case that is something that bothers you.

This is a story about Elisa. Don't get too attached to anyone else because they are all expendable. They come and go from her life very easily. There are some important side characters, but we don't get to know any of them very well. This really didn't bother me. Elise's story is compelling, and I was perfectly happy being in her head the whole time.

I also absolutely LOVED the ending. This is the first in a trilogy, and I'm certainly anxious to find out what's up next for Elisa, but this story ended. No cliffhanger!! Exactly the way a series book should be.... I'll recommend this to fantasy/adventure lovers. I think boys or girls would enjoy this one, even though the main character is a girl. There's war, and battles, and strategy, and dirt, and death. Lots of "boy stuff." And if you shy away from fantasy, you may still want to give this one a try.

As a side note -- the back of the ARC compares this to Graceling (which I enjoyed) and Pierce's Tortall books (which I couldn't get through.) So, be careful of book blurbs!

Book Review: The Agency: The Traitor in the Tunnel, by Y. S. Lee

The Traitor in the Tunnel, the third book in The Agency, is as entertaining as the first book and left me, once again, wanting more.

I love Mary Quinn. She's plucky, brave, and intelligent. She's working as a maid at Buckingham Palace to find out who is stealing valuable trinkets. But that's not really the story here -- there's so much more. These mysteries always turn more complicated for Mary than she expects, and the twists and turns are part of what is so special about these books.

And James is back, so there's more romantic potential, which aren't we all hoping for? I won't say any more about that except the relationship does change -- I just won't say how.

And, after the first book, I was hoping to find out more about Mary's father, and in this book that plot progresses also, and I must say, the direction is unexpected.

There's excitement, royal intrigue, danger, sadness, and romance. All in this little bitty story. These books are definitely worth it if you like historical romance or cozy mysteries. The plot doesn't stop, the pace is brisk, and the pages fly by. These characters have found a place in my heart, and I hope Lee isn't finished yet.

TGIF - School DAZE....

Required Reading: Which book from your school days do youremember reading & enjoying? Is there a book published now that you'd liketo see in today's curriculum for kids?

It's been so long, I can hardly remember what we read in high school. I know we read: Hamlet, Great Gatsby, and A Separate Peace. But my favorite was definitely The Outsiders. This book was about 10 years old when I read it in high school, and it was groundbreaking. It's about 45 years old now...you can do the math...

As for current books -- gosh, there are so many that I wish "every kid could read." I think the literature selection for high school student is only going to get "worse" (that is dictated by standards, and heavy on classics) with the new Common Core Standards. I'm not an expert, though, and I hope I'm wrong. And I do like the standards -- I think they are a step in the right direction! But, I digress...

I think every kid could read Ruth Septys Between Shades of Gray. Or, books like Jennifer Brown's Hate List or Picoult's Nineteen Minutes. There are many historical fiction books (my fav) that I've learned more history from than in any history class. Madame Tussaud comes to mind, only because I read it recently (Robespierre...I had NO IDEA!) There are many others. I could make a case for Harry Potter, if it really came down to it.

OK. I should stop now. I could go on. When you read as much as I do, this list could go on and on.....

Book Review: The Priest's Graveyard, by Ted Dekker

The Priest's Graveyard is an unusual book about the vigilante mentality, that weaves a complex web of injustice and murder.

The story is narrated by Danny Hansen, a priest who originally came from Bosnia, and escaped to the United States after witnessing the horrors of that civil war. He has taken it upon himself to rid the world of people who have committed atrocities that Danny deems beyond redemption.

The second narrator, Renee Gilmore has led a troubled life, being orphaned at an early age and living on the streets supporting a drug addiction. Lamont Myers rescues her, takes her in, and creates a new, albeit unusual, life for her. After Lamont disappears, Renee vows to go after the man that killed the only man she ever loved.

This is when Danny and Renee's paths cross, and I really don't want to say much about what happens, other than there are several unexpected twists and turns, things go bad, and we are never sure what the outcome will be.

Dekker's plot was completely original, at least to me. There were shades of Dexter, but that still isn't a complete comparison. The characters were complex, and bizarre. But justifiably so. I really didn't like Renee, and one of my only complaints is that I couldn't believe how stupid she was. Some of the decisions she made really made me angry. However, she comes from such a warped past, that even her outlandish actions became believable to me.

The characters are unusual, the plotting is unexpected and elaborate, and the pace is steady and compelling. I would recommend this one to psychological thriller or crime drama readers who enjoy unusual protagonists. It's an adult novel, but mature teens would enjoy this one too.

The audio was excellently narrated by Rebecca Soler and Henry Leyva. They both were easy to listen to, not overdoing the inflections, but adding enough to distinguish the characters and emotions.

Book Review: Fall for Anything, by Courtney Summers

Fall for Anything is a realistic contemporary story that many teens will enjoy.

Eddie is obsessed with figuring out why her father committed suicide. He was, at one point, a famous photographer, but had run away from that fame. He still took pictures, just didn't publish any of them. Unlike Eddie, her mother has shut down, spending most days in bed or wondering around in her husband's robe, seemingly unconcerned about Eddie or her father's motivations.

Often, in the middle of the night, Eddie visits the building that her father jumped off when he committed suicide. One night, she meets Culler Evans, who claims to be her father's student. Eddie begins a strange attraction to Culler, as they both try to figure out why her father chose this path.

Milo is Eddie's best friend since second grade. He has been supportive and has stuck around, even when Eddie hasn't been totally honest. There's a bit of a love triangle here, but it doesn't overpower the story. It's a story about a teen who's struggling, and at this point doesn't have much support from her mother. She has friends, and of course, latches on to Culler, who she believes can help her do the one thing that will make her life better - find out why her dad did what he did. In the end, after suffering even more betrayals, there is some hope that Eddie and her mother will find some closure, but it's not perfect.

I enjoyed reading this story. Summers' writing flows well and is easy to read. I never felt strong emotions towards any of the characters. I never wanted to quit reading -- I was invested -- but this isn't a story that will stick with me for a long time. It was a good story, nothing more. I would recommend this to teens who like this sort of problem novel, filled with teen angst, but there are probably other books I would recommend first.

Book Review: The Manufactured Identity, by Heath Sommer

The Manufactured Identity has a very unique and intriguing plot, but my impatience compelled me to skim.

It's one of those books where you just can't figure out what is going on. And I like those book. We are introduced to a lot of characters, but I didn't have trouble keeping track, so that isn't a complaint. Some of them are loosely related, and that helped.

The book isn't very long, but I just got really impatient for the "reveal." Not enough happens to these characters as we go along. I read over half the book, and a little past that, something happens that connects two of the character, and then I pretty much thought I had it figured out. Not all the details, but I had another 150 pages to read. So, I skimmed the rest of the book. I'm sure this is partly due to my reading "mood."

Like I said, I thought is was a great, unique plot. It's psychological and complex. There's a lot going on. But I had trouble with the pace. And, the writing, at times was a bit overly descriptive and even a bit ostentatious. Here's a couple examples:

"The problem with all mysteries is that once a coincidence is established, probability sets its ugly face into yours and tries to undermine the veracity of the complex." p. 136

"She pulled out her sword and cut through the aggregated flaxen of her depression." p. 139

I read mostly young adult, so I'm not generally a literary reader. But I do enjoy some literary fiction. Some of this language was just a bit much for me. Others may think it colorful and entertaining.

This is part of a trilogy that I won, and I know Marce absolutely loves these books, so you should check out her thoughts too.

Cut, by Patricia McCormick is such a powerful book. It's one of the first YA books I read that made me think, "Wow! Every teen girl would love this!" I thought it was something true to their voice, dramatic, and delivering a message. It's also helpful that the book is relatively short.

Since then, there have been many books that have had this effect on me. Ellen Hopkins' books, for one example. But Cut was my first. It still gets checked out regularly, without my prompting. We have a couple of copies, and have replaced this book more than once. It's one of those books that teens read and then ask, "Do you have any more books like this?" Written about twelve years ago, it still packs a powerful punch. If you read teen contemporaries and you haven't read this one, it's worth your time.

Book Review: A Monster Calls, by Patrick Ness

A Monster Calls reads like a fairy tale about a young boy who has visits from a monster in the middle of the night.

Conor's mother is very sick with cancer, and he's been able to "keep it together" on the surface. The only problem he is having is with some school bullies, and the recurring nightmare that Conor is unwilling to talk about.

One night, Conor is visited by the Yew tree that grows in the churchyard next door. The tree appears as a giant monster, but compared to other things Conor is going through, the tree isn't very scary.

The story is poignant, and simple. It is beautifully told, and accompanied by dark, mysterious illustrations. It explores the themes of grief, survivor guilt, adolescent rebellion, family relationships, bullying, and fear itself, as Conor is forced to confront his true feelings and accept the inevitable.

I'm not sure what to say about this one. It was OK. I'm trying to see how reading this might help some younger teens who were going through similar situations, and maybe it would. I can't see recommending this one for its entertainment value. It's a book with a purpose, and I think it fulfills that, but otherwise, I don't see much appeal to the general middle schooler.

Happy Friday everyone! Ginger always comes up with interesting questions and here's this week's:

Book Blogger Pride: What do you take pride in when it comesto blogging?

1. I take pride in the fact that I post almost every day, usually 6 times per week, and most of my posts are book reviews.

2. I take pride in the fact that I follow about 250 book blogs, and I at least look at every post in my reader every day. I don't read every word, but I know what you've posted about.

3. I take pride in the fact that I review books as I read them while they are still fresh in my mind. I read bloggers who say they have seven reviews to write, or something like that. I could never do that! I know you take notes, but it's still hard for me to get "the feeling" of the book so long after I've read it. I need to write as I read.

This is an interesting question, because I've been contemplating things like a new blog design, or moving to Wordpress, as I've seen a lot of bloggers do lately. But, you know, I'm just a "simple" blogger. This isn't a business for me. It's not a competition either. I'm having a blast....16 months and counting, and no blogging slump here. I love that I have more and more followers all the time, but I'd do the same thing if I only had ten. If I spend too much time on blog posts, and designs, and memes, then I have less time to read. Which truly is my passion. I do hope that shows in my blog.

So, yeah, some day when I'm in the mood I'm going to do something about my design. I may even put forth some money to pay for something. But I have too many books to read to worry about that right now.....

Book Review: Partials, By Dan Wells

Partials describes an "end of life as we know it" scenario that will keep you on the edge of your seat rooting the heroine.

Kira is determined to make the world a better place. Eleven years ago, they experienced The Break, and the only surviving humans have survived on Long Island, New York, eking out whatever semblance of their previous existence they can. Almost the entire civilization succumbed to RM, a disease spread by the enemy, the Partials. Since The Break, every baby that has been born has contracted RM and died within a few days. Kira works as a medic and wants to find a cure.

No one has seen the Partials since The Break, but it is suspected that they are still a threat, so security is very high. There is also a rebel group called The Voice that is terrorizing the city, because they oppose the government and specifically the Hope Act, which requires everyone over the age of 18 to give birth to as many babies as possible, in the hope that eventually one will be born with immunity.

Kira thinks that the answer to the cure lies with the Partials, and she wants to hunt one down and gather specimens from him. Partials are basically humanoids that have been genetically engineered. They then turned on their creators, starting the chaos that ensued eleven years ago.

Kira is an unlikely kick-ass female heroine. She doesn't know what she is capable of, but as the adventure unfolds, she becomes very brave and also is very intelligent. I thought it was a little far-fetched that she came up with all these ideas about the cure that no other scientists has pursued, but this is a small complaint. Her friends are all individual, have their own opinions, but end up supporting Kira in their own way. Kira has a long-time boyfriend, Marcus, who wants to marry her. Kira isn't ready for this, and romance doesn't play much of a role in this story.

The most enjoyable aspect of this novel is the pacing. I was swept up in this world and in each adventure these characters experienced. And there were several. Just as one part of the story came to a close, another aspect took over, keeping the pages flipping unnoticed. I'm not familiar with Long Island, Manhattan, and all the Burroughs, but a New Yorker might really enjoy the descriptions of this setting. Even without that knowledge, the city was vividly described.

Wells' plot is exciting and keeps you on your toes. There are a few unexpected twists and several tense moments. It has a satisfying ending that ties up the main plot lines, but leaves plenty of room for the story to continue. This one is a definite addition to my "dystopain must reads." It's a great book for teens - both boys and girls. There isn't anything to keep younger teens from this one either, except the length.

Book Review: The Agency: A Spy in the House, by Y.S. Lee

The Agency: A Spy in the House introduces a unique Victorian character, Mary Quinn, whose intelligence and spunk are atypical for the times.

Mary was destitute, a thief, and destined for the gallows when AnneTreleaven rescues her and gives her a spot at Miss Scrimshaw's Academy for Girls. After several years of school, Mary is invited to join The Agency, a network of female spies who are also managed by Anne and her partner, Felicity.

Mary's first assignment is to be a companion to Angelica Thorold, the spoiled, rich child of Henry Thorold. Henry is suspected of illegal smuggling. Mary is only to listen and find out what she can.

Of course, Mary does more than listen, and in the process becomes acquainted with James Easton. These two have a lovely chemistry, but the romance doesn't sizzle quite yet.

Lee hasn't written realistic historical fiction. There was no organization of female detectives, at least as far as we know. But, the setting is authentic Victorian London. The characters, costumes, customs, and even the filth, put the reader in the story. Mary is perceptive, but makes some stupid decisions. The mystery isn't earth shattering, but the main characters are put in some danger, and there is tension at the end.

The information about Mary's past is the part that most intrigued me, and I'm assuming we'll find out more about this in future adventures. I'm looking forward to those. There's much to keep a reader interested, and I won't hesitate to recommend this one to teens and adults who like some mystery and adventure with their history.

The second book, The Body at the Tower, is available now. The third, The Traitor in the Tunnel, releases February 28, 2012.

Book Review: Mr. Popper's Penguins, by Richard and Florence Atwater

Mr. Popper's Penguins is a classic children's story that is silly and entertaining, as children's stories should be.

Mr. Popper loves to read about the South Pole and Admiral Drake sends him a penguin to keep as a pet. Well, you can imagine there are many obstacles to keeping a penguin, and eventually twelve penguins, in your house. Each obstacle is conquered with very sensible silliness.

I can imagine the children's belly laughs as you read this one aloud. The text is simple; the sentences are short and choppy, but rhythmic.

I haven't seen the movie, but I'm sure Jim Carrey is a wonderful Mr. Popper. The book was originally written by Richard, but after suffering a stroke, it was finished (and parts were re-written) by his wife Florence. It was originally published in 1938, but there is nothing to keep today's kids from thoroughly enjoying this wacky tale.

Book Review: The Probability of Miracles, by Wendy Wunder

The Probability of Miracles is not about a teen girl with cancer, it's about a teen girl who learns to live, as she knows she is dying.

First of all, I don't know how anyone can write a book like this. I don't know what it's like to have cancer, of course I have loved ones who have succumbed to this disease, but it isn't the same. I felt that Wunder's story was spot-on.

Cam is sixteen, she's been fighting cancer for years, and she's got a snarky wit to go along with her disease. The news isn't good, but her mother and sister, Perry, haven't given up. They've decided to pack up and move to Promise, Maine, for the summer,, since there are rumors of miracles in this town.

They pack up their belongings in a U-Haul, and take off for the 1,500 mile trip -- stopping at Cam's friend Lily's house along the way. Lily is Cam's best friend, and they met while they were going through cancer treatments. They also stop at Nana's house, Cam's grandmother. All of these characters are so genuine, I think I've met them in my own life.

Once they arrive in Promise, miracles do begin to happen, even though Cam doesn't see it that way. The romance is simply cute. It develops slowly, and Asher and Cam's banter will have you chuckling out loud. Yes it's sad, but it's inspiring too. All of the loved ones around Cam behave realistically. They don't always say or do the right thing, but neither does Cam. Cam's evolution from quitter to believer leaves a warmth in your heart. It's a slow, difficult journey, but satisfying.

I'm sitting here trying to think of something negative to say, and I can't...

Excellent pace, believable plot, characters to connect with...I would recommend this to teen contemporary and romance readers, with the caveat that if they are dealing with cancer in their lives, they may want to wait on this one. I think it would be too difficult for someone if this situation is too close.

Book Review: Graffiti Moon, by Cath Crowley

Graffiti Moon is a beautifully written book that teens will easily relate to.

Lucy has just finished year 12, and is planning on celebrating all night with her friends. They hook up with some boys, and Lucy wants to find the elusive Shadow, a graffiti artist that she has been trying to find for a long time. As the night goes on, she realizes maybe Ed, the guy who is helping her find Shadow, is an interesting guy himself. They are both interested in art - Lucy in glass blowing, and Ed in painting and drawing.

But, things go bad. Ed lies, he puts Lucy in danger, and things quickly spiral out of control. Besides, he has a girlfriend-or at least he told Lucy he does. And, it's difficult for him to hear Lucy rave about Shadow, when Ed knows he IS Shadow--but he's vowed not to tell anyone about his alter ego.

I loved the characters. Ed and Lucy have such entertaining dialog, that I laughed out loud several times. I really loved their mentors, Bert and Al, too. I'm so happy there were strong adult figures in their lives. And their friends behaved like friends. The conversations and reactions seemed very authentic.

Crowley's writing is lyrical. Leo's poetry, Lucy's glass, the graffiti and all the artistic references are magically described. At times, it was like I was listening to music, the prose flows so beautifully.

I do have a couple of minor negative comments, which had little effect on my enjoyment. I got confused, at times, about who was narrating. This may have to do with the ebook format, and flipping back a page usually got me back on track. Also, I really hate when the romantic tension is created by characters just not telling each other the truth. I got past this, though, since I could relate to Ed's difficult situation.

It's a feel-good book, with a little tension, but a satisfying ending that teens who are fans of contemporaries must read. I look forward to getting this one in their hands.

Book Review: The Night Strangers, by Chris Bohjalian

The Night Strangers scores a 10 on the creepiness scale. It's a very detailed book, with two story lines that are both disturbing.

Chip Linton crashed his airplane into Lake Champlain, killing 39 people on board, but surviving himself. Of course there is extreme guilt on his part, even though it wasn't his fault, and he did everything correctly.

He suffers from debilitating PTSD, and so his family (wife, Emily and twin daughters Hailey and Garnett) moves to a new town in northern New Hampshire. They buy a very old Victorian house with a shady past. In the basement, there's an old door, fastened with 39 6-inch carriage bolts. Chip becomes obsessed with this door, wondering what's behind it. Add that to the knife, ax, and crow bar they found hidden in various rooms in the house and we have the perfect setting for Chip to become haunted by three of the passengers who were killed on the plane. One of them is a little girl, similar in age to his twins.

The new town proves to be another macabre aspect of the story. Greenhouses are pervasive, including the one on Chip and Emily's property. The women who own the greenhouses call themselves "herbalists" and these are no ordinary plants. They are adept at making various tinctures to heal whatever problem you may have. These women take an obsessive interest in the twins and insist they learn how to tend to their various plants, but it soon becomes apparent they have ulterior motives. This group's story is very slowly revealed and becomes more and more horrifying as the book goes on. It's really masterfully told.

This is a very detailed story, and there's much more to it, but I think you can get the picture. The telling is also unique. Part of the story is told from Chip's POV, in the second person. It is amazing how well this technique works. In the audiobook, these sections are narrated by a separate male narrator. The rest of the book is in the third person POV, told from various characters' perspectives.

If I have any complaints, it's the detail and the length. Especially at the beginning, when describing the airplane crash. It takes a long time, and is exquisitely detailed, and I kind of got tired of hearing about it over and over. But, the repetition is also a literary tool that I came to appreciate. As an aside, the author was interviewed at the end of the audiobook, and he actually went to a pilot training facility where they have a dunk tank which simulates various types of airplane water crashes. He was dunked several times!

Since I was listening, I'm also more forgiving of length. If I had been reading the novel, I may have done some skimming.

The characters are so well drawn, that I felt like I was living in the neighborhood (but thankful I'm not!) The end was thrilling enough to get my heart pounding. Oh, the epilogue. I must admit, it was perfect. Not what I expected. Not what I wanted. But....perfect.

Bohjalian is an artist at description. He's extremely creative, weaving the crash, the house, the herbalists, and the family all together in a tale that is difficult to describe, but enjoyable for the lover of the macabre. I highly recommend this book to those readers.

Book Review: Sean Griswold's Head, by Lindsey Leavitt

Sean Griswold's Head is a delightful, heartwarming story that will appeal to younger teens who enjoy contemporaries.

Peyton gets very angry at her parents, and everyone, when she finds out her father has multiple sclerosis. Her family has been keeping this from her for at least six months. After she refuses to speak to her parents, her mother sets up an appointment with the school guidance counselor. The counselor suggests that Peyton find a focus object, and journal about it while she learns to deal with all of her other emotions.

She chooses Sean Griswold's head, the kid who has sat in front of her since third grade, but she really knows very little about him.

The attention on Sean expands from his head to his entire body and personality. Peyton's friend, Jac, is all too willing to assist Peyton in her "research." And, soon Sean becomes an obsession.

The obsession progresses, and yes, eventually blossoms into romance. But there's more to the book. There's a strong message about judging people by their appearance. About assuming you know a lot about someone, just because they act a certain way. This is portrayed in several ways throughout the story. (A teacher, who they assume is hung over when she decides to show them movies, the "goth" guy that inexplicably is Sean's friend, Sean himself, who has been next to Peyton for years, but she knows nothing about him.)

Leavitt utilizes a strong family support system, making this book stand out. Peyton has two older brothers, and her parents are involved -- not the typical inattentive parents we see so much in YA fiction. What is a friend? The relationship between Jac and Peyton also delivers a powerful message.

I fear I'm giving the impression that this is a preachy book, but it's not. It's a heartwarming story, with steady pacing and realistic situations. The messages don't hit you across the head, because we can relate to these situations -- teens experience these things on a regular basis.

Recommend this one! It's a quick read, entertaining, and powerful. It is probably more suited to younger teens, but more experienced readers shouldn't be discouraged.

Monday Memories: A Single Shard

A Single Shard, by Linda Sue Park, won the Newbery Medal in 2002. I was a newbie librarian back then, and I couldn't wait to read the winner and share it with all of my middle school students. Don't get me wrong, I loved this book. It's a story that takes place in 12th-century Korea, about a very poor boy who, after breaking a very expensive piece of pottery, has to make up for it by working for the potter. He eventually works hard enough to become a potter too. It's a story of supreme struggle and sacrifice, with messages about working together for the good of many, and courage, and it's very beautifully written. But...when I finished it, I thought, "Oh, I'll give this to.....who?"

I couldn't really see the appeal to the general middle school population. I really couldn't recommend this title as an overall entertaining book. I think it would be great to go along with a study of ancient cultures. It could be my fault because of my feelings, but this book rarely, if ever, got checked out. Even after publicizing it as a "Winner!"

In my opinion, kids would much rather choose a book because they've heard from other kids that it's good. I don't think they care about winners. And, this was my first realization that awards committees don't always care about what appeals to kids either. There's a definite disconnect, at least sometimes.

IMM - Something Beautiful

The first thing I want to show you is not a book, it's a book mark. I won this from Carla @ Library Mosaic during her Author Weekend Giveaway. I just think it's beautiful.

These are made out of vintage playing cards and I got to choose the one that I wanted. It was a difficult choice! You should check out BookmarkWhimsey to see them all. They are not that expensive, very well made, and lovely.

Book Review: On the Bright Side, by S. R. Johannes

On the Bright Side is a hilarious, if somewhat over the top, portrayal of life after death.

I must admit, it's been quite a while since I've been 11 years old. Maybe too long for this book. Gabby is killed in an accident, and leaves behind a best friend, Michael, who she longs to be more than friends with. When Gabby awakes in Cirrus (think: heaven) she finds that she will be a BIT (Bright In Training.) Brights are like guardian angels.

Now, back on earth, Angela, who used to be Gabby's friend, is now heavily after Michael. And, of course, guess who Gabby gets to watch over as her first human? Angela.

You can imagine this is difficult for Gabby, and her SKYpal, Jessica, is watching over Michael, so they are constantly together. Gabby breaks some rules, since she is so jealous, and ends up in a lot of trouble. She might even get kicked out of heaven. But she has a plan to fix everything....

There is quite an adventure mixed in with this light-hearted look at the afterlife for adolescents. I got annoyed with all of Gabby's stupid decisions and her jealousy, but it did make for an exciting climax to the story. The tongue-in-cheek heavenly references to modern day products and people will keep you chuckling.

The story is well-written and easy to understand. All of the characters are fully developed, and there aren't too many of them. The story is complex, but not difficult to understand. I did roll my eyes a bit much, but reminded myself that I'm not the intended audience.The middle school crowd will like this funny, adventurous book about a character they can relate to (even if she is dead).

Feature & Follow Friday -- It's Been a While

I haven't participated in this for several weeks, but I'm back. Here's the question to ponder:

Q: Define what characteristics your favorite books share. Dothey all have a kick ass heroine or is the hot love interest the Alpha Male?

My favorite books are "page turners." The kind that make your heart pump. They have lots of adventure, and daring escapades. Although, if I don't relate to the characters, my heart doesn't pound, so it takes more than plotting to really make a great book.

I do like sweet, warm-hearted, friendship books too. (Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants is one of my favorites.) I guess being an eclectic reader, I have lots of different things that rock my book-world.

Book Review: Pure, by Julianna Baggott

Pure is a unique apocalyptic story of teens from two different worlds trying to make a future for themselves. I enjoyed the book, and I'm glad I read it, but I did have a few issues.

About eight years before the story, the world was destroyed by nuclear bombs. Apparently this event was anticipated, so there was a dome that was built to house the survivors. But it really wasn't for the survivors, it was for certain people who were chosen to be Pure.

Pressia survives outside the Dome in the barren wasteland, full of dangerous, genetically altered creatures and humans that have been melded with whatever objects (or other people) they were in contact during the flash. Pressia has a doll in place of one of her hands. This was bizarre to me, but required a lot of imagination on the Baggott's part. Every person, when they turn 16, is required to join the militia, to be trained to fight their way into the Dome. Pressia turns 16 very soon, and she is scared.

Partridge lives in the Dome, and his life consists of school and military training. The male teens also undergo treatments to make them have superhuman strength. For some reason, Partridge's treatments aren't working. His father is the leader of the Pures. When his father speaks of his mother in the present tense, Partridge wonders if his mother is still alive out in the wilderness. Has his father been lying to him? So Partridge concocts a plan to escape the dome and find his mother.

Once Partridge and Pressia end up together, they begin to piece together a past that is much different than both of them have been led to believe. Their adventure is assisted by several side characters that are important to the story. I didn't love these characters. I don't know why. I was interested in finding out what happened to them, but I didn't feel emotional during their struggles.

I thought the beginning was a bit slow. There is a lot of prep before the actual adventure begins, and at almost 450 pages, this could have been pared down a bit. I thought some of the episodes were a bit cheesy. I don't know how else to describe it, but it seemed sort of like anything could happen in such a bizarre world, and so it did.

I enjoyed the major plot line. It is intricate, and there are a lot of details that added to the intrigue. The ending resolved some immediate issues, but leaves plenty for the next volume in the series. I will recommend this to apocalyptic, and even zombie lovers. I think, if they are willing to put up with the length, that they will be sufficiently entertained.

Spotlight Book: On the Bright Side, by S. R. Johannes

I had planned on reviewing this book around it's release date (today) but I just didn't make it. I will be posting a review within a week or two, though, but in the mean time, let me tell you about it...

I read Untraceable, by S.R. Johannes and really enjoyed it. It was a very exciting book, and you can click on the title to see my review.

Now, it sounds like On the Bright Side is a different kind of story. But I know Johannes is a good story-teller, so I'm looking forward to it.

Summary: On the Bright Side is a hilarious road to guardian angeldompaved with so much drama and due-paying that it makes middle school lookpainless.

As if the devil’s food cake at her wake and the white fatpants she’s stuck wearing for eternity weren’t bad enough, fourteen year-oldGabby is quick to discover that Cirrus, the main rung of Heaven, is a far cryfrom the Pearly Gates. Here, Skyphones and InnerNets are all the rage. UntilGabby finds out she has to protect Angela, her school nemesis, in order to moveup through the training levels of heaven. Problem is, Angela is now hitting onGabby's should-have-been boyfriend. (awkward!)

Instead of protecting Angela, Gabby pranks her (liketripping is a sin?) at the hopes of cooling off the new couple. At first, theyseem harmless until the school dance sabotage gets completely out of control.Then, her Celestial Sky Agent, who happens to have anger management issues ofhis own, puts Gabby on probation, threatening her eternal future.

Book Review: Legend, by Marie Lu

Legend was so exciting, it was very difficult for me to put down.

I LOVED these characters. The book is told in alternating viewpoints - Day and June. They are from the "opposite sides of the track." This is a dystopian military society on the west coast of what used to be the USA. They are at war with "the Colonies," which is the rest of the US. There's also a plague going around infecting poor people. Day is a rebel, stirring things up for the Republic, and their most wanted criminal. June is the Republic's golden child--perfect score on their tests, she is the youngest person to ever have been so high in the military.

Why would these two have anything to do with each other? Day kills June's brother, and she vows to get revenge. She goes undercover in the poor district and eventually runs into Day.

That's pretty much as far as I want to take it. Circumstances bring these two together, tear them apart, and then ???? I can't forget these characters. I loved them both equally. I keep thinking about them, and hoping that they are still OK, even after I've finished the book. These are FICTIONAL characters...duh...

That's one mark of a good book. If it sticks with you. I can't believe these two are kind of in limbo until the next book comes out. I hope they are OK.....(fictional characters, again!!!)

The weaponry, technology, plague, setting, and side characters are all interesting. But for me this was about Day and June, and their exciting adventurous plot.

I can't wait to expose my Hunger Games, Divergent, and other dystopian fans to this one!

Book Review: The Girls of No Return, by Erin Saldin

The Girls of No Return is one of those books that sneaks up on you. It is very slow and deliberate, but very elegant.

Lida has had some problems. She is being contacted by someone from her past named Margaret, but she isn't ready to talk to her. She hasn't seen Margaret for two years, and it's apparent that something happened, involving Margaret, that Lida is seeing a therapist for. The therapist suggests that Lida write down what happened. And so she begins.

Lida is being dropped off at a school for troubled girls in the wilderness of Idaho. I thought the set up here was a bit slow, introducing the (beautiful) setting and the characters, but Saldin's writing is very lyrical.

The setting and characters are important. The hikes, the lake, and the camping trips are an important part of the Alice Marshall school and the story. Lida's nemisis is Boone. She's the bully who lives in Lida's cabin and has a "special" way of welcoming all the newcomers. Lida is a loner, never speaking much or trying to make friends until a new girl, Gia, arrives who Lida is attracted to. They begin a clandestine friendship, because Boone absolutely despises Gia. And, as Lida finds out, there's much more to Boone that what appears on the surface.

As we are getting to know these characters, who are diverse and wrought with problems and typical teen attitudes, we are wondering, "What is Lida's Thing?" Everyone else is wondering too, because she isn't sharing any of her past with her teachers or school mates during their "Circle Share" meetings. Margaret teaches the outdoor class, Lida's favorite, but she still isn't going to confide in her.

Saldin expertly reveals more of Lida's character bit by bit. And we also get to know a little about the other characters, but some still remain very mysterious. Since we only hear what Lida hears, just how much of what these girls share are lies?

The triangle here isn't a love triangle, but a friendship triangle between the three girls -- Lida, Gia, and Boone -- with Lida very much in the middle. There is a horrible occurrence at the culmination, but there's much to absorb along the way. And, the future is hopeful, at least for some of our characters. The strength of this book is in the telling -- the descriptive metaphors and the characters that burrow into your heart. The plot is a slow burn, but worth it.

Recommend this to teens (as well as adults) who like contemporaries, boarding school stories, problem kids, and beautiful prose.

TGIF -- Great time for Reading!

Oh, we are really in the winter doldrums now. Wet, cold...yuck....thanks goodness for BOOKS!!!

Ginger's question this week is:

Buy or Borrow: Where do your books that you read come from?The bookstore? The library? Do you prefer to own a book, or have it on loan?

I am a LIBRARIAN, so I get a lot of what I read from the library. Even if we don't have the book, we have an excellent inter-library loan system, so I can pretty much get anything. It's AWESOME. Please, if you don't already, check out your local library if you have one. You can save SO much money. There are few books that I feel compelled to own. As a matter of fact, most of the books I buy for myself, I end up donating to my library. All of the ARCs I receive get put in the library. I really want books to be read. If they are sitting on my shelves at home (or in a box, like many of my books are) then no one is reading them. I love to share books with people. That's what my job is all about! That's my passion!

What do I keep? I keep all of my autographed books. :) I have some of my children's favorite books. I have a very old falling apart Gone With the Wind first edition. I have some books that I've read, but I want my husband or daughter to read, so I haven't given them away. I can't really remember any more, since they are all packed away in boxes!!

Book Review: The Statistical Probability of Love at First Sight, by Jennifer E. Smith

What a charming story. The Statistical Probability of Love at First Sight is not only a story of romantic love, but a story of the love within a family. If you haven't read a review of this one yet, then you must have been under a rock. I can't recall one negative review.

A chance meeting between Hadley and Oliver, after Hadley misses her flight by four minutes, leads to the beginnings of an enchanting romance. Even though the story takes place in twenty-four hours, this isn't "insta-love." There is a slow natural progression from conversation to flirting to connecting on a romantic level. We still don't know what's going to happen to these two at the end of the book, but we are hopeful, of course.

Hadley is going to London to attend her father's marriage -- to a woman she's never met. I loved how these two love stories tied together. Hadley has a great deal of understandable anger towards her father for leaving her mother and falling in love with another woman. The conversation that Hadley and her father have towards the end of the book is my favorite scene.

"I mean, I only knew him for a few hours. It's ridiculous. It makes no sense."

Dad smiles, then reaches up to straighten his crooked bow tie. "That's the way these things work, kiddo," he says. "Love isn't supposed to make sense. It's completely illogical." (193-194)

And there, we have not only Hadley's story, but her dad's story too. How can she not come to a better understanding of what her father went through, when she has just experienced "love at first sight."

This book is magical. Anyone who is any kind of romantic at all will love this story. It's all good. The characters, the pace, the setting--I'm not going to go into details, but you won't be disappointed. Can't wait to start handing this out to my teens!

Book Review: Drowning Instinct, by Ilsa J. Bick

I was really moved by Drowning Instinct. It's a really unpleasant story, but well-written, with characters who have problems for which there are no easy answers.

The first scene in the book is Jenna, our 16-year-old main character, in a hospital emergency room talking to a detective named Bob. He obviously wants information that Jenna has, so he leaves her a digital recording device, so she can feel free to talk.

The rest of the story is Jenna's description of her life. She's had a dysfunctional childhood with a mother who is a drunk and a domineering father. She was critically injured in the fire that burned down her grandfather's house. She misses her brother, who used to be the only person she could talk to, but he is away.

Her father decides to take Jenna out of therapy and move her to a new, private high school. Jenna becomes friends with Mr. Anderson, her chemistry teacher and track coach.

I really don't want to say too much. Suffice it to say, Jenna has problems, and as she very slowly reveals the extent of these problems through her narrative, your heart breaks. She finds some comfort, and possibly some healing, by spending time with Mr. Anderson. These characters, especially our narrator, become our friends. There is a slow progression, but it's very steady, and at no time did I feel the exposition was dragging. Every piece added something to my understanding of the situation or characters. There are also a few surprises along the way.

By the time I got to the climactic ending of this book, I didn't know what to think. It's confusing -- and we wonder, just like Jenna, what to believe. Bick really sums up her (and my) feelings in the acknowledgments at the end of the book. I can't really quote it, because this is an ARC. But, basically it's that there's not always a clear line between the predator and the victim. Relationships are complicated and you can grow by being in a damaging relationship, as well as a healthy one. Good people can make bad decisions, and get too deep into improper situations before they realize it.

I love how the book's title ties into the story. I won't tell you how, but it's a totally appropriate title, and I appreciate it. I think this is one for more mature, high school age teens. The subject matter is somewhat disturbing, but those who are ready and enjoy realistic "problem" novels will be enthralled with this one.

Monday Memories: The Butter Battle Book

I'm a big Dr. Seuss fan, as I'm sure most of us are. The Butter Battle Book was published in 1984, almost 30 years after The Cat in the Hat. I was already out of high school when this was published, so it didn't really hit my radar until I had kids. The book has the usually quirky rhymes and crazy words, as well as delightful illustrations, but it also has strong message of tolerance. The allusion is to the Cold War, where the Zooks and the Yooks could destroy the whole world over things like eating your bread with the "butter side down." On a smaller level, this one could be used as and anti-bullying story for young kids too.

And, if they don't get the message, it's still a fun, typical Dr. Seuss tale.

My son and I got into a deep discussion about why anyone would eat their bread with the butter on the bottom. He insisted that wasn't very practical.... That's what I love about these memory posts -- remembering my time as a child, as well as those special times with my children...

Book Review: Kill Alex Cross, by James Patterson

Let me start off by saying (if you aren't aware) I'm a HUGE Alex Cross fan. So, I loved Kill Alex Cross. Is it the best one? No. But I'll keep reading them as long as Patterson is writing them. I love the characters -- Alex's family -- and the way they relate.

The story this time, was not as heart pounding as some. The President's children have been kidnapped. Yes, the President of the U.S. At the same time, some fairly scary terrorist attacks have been happening in Washington D.C. Of course, Alex gets all wrapped up in these cases, especially the kidnapping aspect and ends up being heroic, as usual. This book was kind of different, since there are really two stories going on at once, and the question is: Are these events related?

I'm not going to tell you, but this two story line technique is one reason I didn't like this plot as much. But, Nana is there, and a potential new recurring character who has the potential to reek some havoc within the family. I hope these books keep coming, because I feel like I've grown up with these people. And as I always say, I can't help but picture Morgan Freeman as Alex. (A bit younger version, though.)

This is an adult book, but teens will enjoy this too. We always point our male reluctant reader to these, because of the short chapter lengths and the compelling plot lines. Reluctant readers need to feel the pages turning and feel like they are accomplishing something, and these books are great for that!

Book Review: Want to Go Private? by Sarah Darer Littman

I've seen many reviews of Want to Go Private that suggest this book should be read by every teen girl. I do think that this is a book that will speak to many, as well as being an engaging story.

The book is divided into three parts. I really had trouble relating to the first part. This is where Abby develops a relationship with Luke online, believes everything he says, does everything he asks, and ends up in trouble. I was frustrated with Abby because she missed all the signs of an internet predator. I did understand her keeping everything a secret -- from her parents, sister, and even her best friend. You have to understand that I'm a loooooong way from 14 years old. I had a hard time putting myself in her position and understanding her stupidity. I'm not saying this wasn't accurately portrayed, I'm just saying I had a hard time relating. I was very frustrated--but that's not a bad thing.

The second part, which is told from the perspectives of her family and friends as they frantically try to figure out what happened to Abby was brilliant. I really could feel the frustration, anger, and anxiety of these characters.

The third part is from Abby's point of view again, and basically is her and her family's adjusting and recuperating. I'm really glad they sought out counselling -- I can't imagine having any kind of normal life after these events without it. I really understood her father's reaction -- even though he made me mad. I'm happy that things were at least hopeful, but nowhere near perfect, as the book ends.

If it's possible to teach 14-year-olds that some decisions they make today can be life changing, then this book has potential to do it. I'm just not sure it's possible.....

I WILL recommend this one widely, however. If it enlightens even one teen, then it is a masterpiece, as far as I'm concerned. Littman's writing is tight. The book is hard to put down. It's very emotional, at least for this adult, but I think it will be emotional for teens too. This is a wonderful contribution to contemporary teen fiction about an important and timely topic.

Book Review: Princess of the Wild Swans, by Diane Zahler

While middle grade fantasy is probably one of my least favorite genres, Princess of the Wild Swans did manage to keep me entertained, and I can definitely recommend it to fans of fairy tales.

Meriel is typical spoiled princess. She doesn't really have to do anything she doesn't want to -- even though her governess tries to get her to learn to sew. She has five brothers, and a father who dote on her, and no mother.

When her father brings home a new queen, Orianna, Meriel's world turns upside down. Her father is totally entranced by Orianna, and the queen seems to want nothing to do with Meriel. Then, Orianna sends the five brothers away to school, and Meriel is absolutely devastated.

She finds out that all is not as it seems -- her brothers really aren't away at school, but I won't tell you any more than that. Suffice it to say that Orianna is evil. Meriel has to grow up and become a strong, determined woman in order to save her family, and she does. I don't think that is a spoiler, since this is a fairy tale, and we all know they live happily ever after.

The pacing in this one keeps you turning the pages. I think it is easy to get frustrated with Meriel, but things happen pretty quickly and she redeems herself. Liam nad Riona, who become Meriel's friends and help her free her brothers, are the most interesting side characters. There are also lots of interesting mythical creatures -- witches, faeries, puca, merrow, and others that keep the fairy tale sufficiently ethereal.

It's a quick read that younger fans of fairy tales will enjoy. I would even say 4th and 5th graders would like this one.

Book Review: The Jinx, by Dougald Lamont

The Jinx is an exciting page-turner that will appeal to younger readers who are after some adventure.

Stephen's eighth grade year should be great, but when awful things begin happening to friends and family when he's around, he decides that somehow he is jinxed, and he needs to leave to protect his loved ones.

Stephen gets involved in a battle between "chaos" and "order" and along the way he is chased by some pretty horrible creatures called Chaons. He also meets an unusual ally named Daedalus.

Once Stephen leaves home, this book takes off and never stops. It definitely keeps your interest, as Stephen fights for his life, and to save lives around him. There are mysterious men who want to help him, but he isn't sure who they are and what motivates them. There is mystery and lots of action.

The book is very short, and although Lamont writes for younger readers, I did feel that there were parts of the plot that needed a bit more exposition. For example, it takes about three paragraphs for Stephen to decide to run away, and then instantly--he's at the bus station buying a ticket. There were a few spots like that, but for the typical teen reader, this probably isn't an issue. More astute readers will also want to know more about just where this jinx came from, and a little more about how Stephen's powers manifest themselves, especially during the ending.

For the intended audience (middle schoolers), I would not hesitate to recommend this to reluctant readers, especially boys, who like their adventure with a bit of a supernatural element.

Book Review: The Gathering Storm, by Robin Bridges

The Gathering Storm is a unique book that pairs a story of romance and Russian aristocracy with paranormal elements, providing a complicated and thrilling plot.

Katarina is a princess. She's also known that she can bring things back from the dead since she was a small child. She keeps this secret to herself and vows to never use these powers. For Katarina's mother, it's all about the balls -- the hair, the dresses, the behavior -- designed to fetch Katarina a husband. Katarina wants no part of it -- she dreams of being a doctor -- an impossibility in 1880s Russia.

This is like a Russion fairy tale, except apparently Russians told fairy tales about the aristocracy having special powers. They were all fairies, or witches, or blood-drinkers, or necromancers. We have all of these in The Gathering Storm. I enjoyed how we were just reading about gowns and balls, and then the characters talk about the witches and fairies as if they are simply a natural part of life.

I have mixed feelings about the book. I couldn't put it down--I had to find out what happened--but....I did roll my eyes repeatedly at the magical elements. Still, I was sucked in to the story. I guess it depends on your ability to suspend your disbelief.

The premise is that someone is raising dead soldiers to make an army to conquer the Tsar. The Tsar and his family are part of the light court. The King and Queen of Montenegro are part of the dark court. Prince Danelo, of Montenegro, is determined to marry Katarina, and use her powers for the dark court.

There's really a lot more to the story. One thing it needed was a family tree diagram. I really had some trouble keeping track of all the characters -- although the story still made sense because I could keep track of the main characters easily. The vampire/undead/necromancer lore was a bit complicated. Especially at the climactic ending. I had to read a few parts over, and I'm still not sure I understand it all. A glossary would have helped too. bogatyr, Koldun, Dekibristi, Vladiki -- there were many words that I just couldn't keep track of.

The fact that Katarina discovers a spell that allows her to be invisible seemed a bit too convenient. I mean, what does that have to do with being a necromancer? But then I tell myself, I didn't complain about the invisibility cloak in Harry Potter, so just go with it. I also found it unbelievable that Katarina would be given a ring which would offer her protection from Prince Danelo and then she forgets to wear it. Then, even more unbelievable, after she realizes what a mistake it was NOT to wear the ring, she loses it. That one is just too much to believe, but still, ended up being a small part of the plot.

It was exciting, especially the ending. I liked Katarina -- she was very brave. I loved that she had a supportive father. I thought Prince George was a big sweetheart. The villains didn't really shake me up. I didn't really feel a palpable danger, and I thought the villians could have been described a bit better. Especially the bogatyr. I didn't get really get that.

I did have some problems with the book, but I can still say I enjoyed it. I would recommend this more to my paranormal addicts than my historical fiction lovers. I think the paranormal aspects would be too much for the historical purists. This book is the first in a trilogy, and I will be interested in the next one, although I probably won't need to buy it the day it comes out. I guess I'm somewhat indifferent.....

Book Review: Scored, by Lauren McLaughlin

Scored is a 1984-type dystopian that takes place in the not-so-distant future providing a lot of food for thought about the economic inequality and technological possibilities that we are experiencing right now.

Everything is about your score. Imani, our main character, is scored very high. The "eyes" that watch her every move are always on her mind. Everything she says or does can affect her score, which can affect her dreams for her future. Her friend, Cady, is low-scoring, which means Imani shouldn't even be associating with her. And, in fact, this association does cause a drastic drop in Imani's score, which means she will be ineligible for a college scholarship.

Diego is one of the "unscored." His parent's haven't signed him up to be scored, so he is considered an outcast at school, and certainly no scored person would want to have anything to do with him.

When a school assignment throws Imani and Diego together, Imani is uncomfortable, especially given the fact that she's questioning the reasons and effects of the scoring system. Learning about Diego's beliefs isn't helping those feelings.

It doesn't sound that bad -- if you work hard, you will be rewarded. Everything is objective, based on a sophisticated computer program that computes your score. The idea is that The Score will eliminate the poorest -- only those people who are lazy and deserve to be poor will be in poverty. Wealth will be more evenly divided, because everyone has the opportunity to excel.

But...is friendship more important than your score? What about freedoms -- such as freedom of speech -- that are being squelched by the score? There's a lot to think about here, and it's wrapped up in a quick, well-paced story that teens will enjoy. McLaughlin has done a good job with the "characters from the opposite side of the tracks" as well as the "controlling corporation" themes. We've seen it before, but this is a nice addition to the pool.

Recommend this to your dystopian fans who enjoy a political bent to their stories. Both boys and girls will be able to relate to the characters, and the book is relatively fast-paced, exciting, and short which makes it appropriate for the reluctant reader.

Book Review: Under the Never Sky, by Veronica Rossi

If you enjoy a kick-ass heroine and a slow-building, believable romance, you must get your hands on Under the Never Sky.

Aria lived in a pod. These have been built to protect people from the harsh conditions of Earth. In the pods, you can experience anything virtually by visiting the Realms. Aria and her friends try to outsmart the technology and Aria ends up in big trouble. Because she can implicate the son of one of the governors, she is thrown out of the pod to survive (or most likely, die) on her own.

Perry is an Outsider whose tribe is barely surviving this harsh terrain. He is a hunter, and prey is getting harder and harder to find. There are also Aether storms, powerful and deadly, that burn up anything in their path. Perry also doesn't get along with his brother, the leader of the tribe, so for various reasons (no spoilers here), Perry ends up leaving the tribe.

He meets Aria. This isn't as unbelievable as it sounds, since Perry has a heightened sense of smell.This sense allows him to sense other's feelings--just by their smell. So he can smell Aria from very far away. The rest of the book is their adventurous quest across this barren land. There are vicious tribes and animals, not to mention the weather to contend with. Aria is unbelievably naive at the beginning, but her transformation is exceptionally written. Perry changes too, and the absolute hate and distrust they feel for each other when they first meet, is eventually replaced with something else. This is totally the opposite of "insta-love." The romance in this book is absolutely perfect. Rossi builds this relationship so carefully that everything seems entirely natural-- or "destined" might be a better word.

But there's so much more than romance. There is an intricate plot to go along with it. Aria and Perry are both looking for something and it behooves them to work together. They must visit an "oasis" of sort, where we meet the colorful Marron. I really don't want to give to much away -- but it will definitely drag you in and hold you.

The side characters are also compelling. They each play a part, but seem to belong to this story. They don't just conveniently appear when needed -- they are part of the world. And what a world. I could feel the dirt and wind as they were travelling. I could see the Aither in the distance.....

Simply, I loved this book. I would call it more "post-apocalyptic" rather than dystopian, but I know it will get that label as well. These characters, I think, are what make the book so special. Or maybe it's the world building...it's all great. Just take my word for it. If this sounds like a book you would like -- you will!

Monday Memories: The Stinky Cheese Man and Other Fairly Stupid Tales

If you haven't read The Stinky Cheese Man and other Fairly Stupid Tales, you really need to. No matter what your age, I can't imagine anyone not thoroughly enjoying these irreverent re-tellings. Jon Scieszka & Lane Smith have some other books of this same ilk, but this is the one my children and I read over and over. This kind of humor was right up my son's alley. We laughed out loud every time! I would never part with my copy of this book.

I can't say it better than the Amazon review: "There are no lessons to be learned or morals to take toheart--just good, sarcastic fun that smart-alecks of all ages will love."

Book Review: Hallowed, by Cynthia Hand

Fans of Unearthly definitely won't want to miss the sequel, Hallowed.

We join Clara, Christian, Tucker, and the rest of the characters a couple of weeks after the end of Unearthly. They are still trying to make sense of what happened at (the end.) I'm making this spoiler-free, so I won't talk about what happened.

Clara is confused about her purpose, and feels like a failure. She's madly in love with Tucker, but feels compelled to be with Christian. The love triangle takes center stage here, and both males are such wonderful characters, that it is impossible for me to choose which one Clara should end up with. Someone is going to get their heart broken.

The angels find out more about their history and their fates, and with this knowledge comes much sadness. I'm not a "crier" but this one had me in tears. There is also much confusion about what the visions mean, what a dark angel is, and we learn some key facts about the ancestry of our main characters.

I continued to fall in love with all the characters -- they are each unique and well defined. Angela, Jeffrey, Wendy, and a new character, Billy, are essential to the story, and their contributions are memorable, making me feel for each one of them. I'm interested to discover Billy's role in the next book.

After the sad ending, it feels like the next book might be a new beginning, but I'm sure there will be additional challenges for all of the angels, as there have been in the first two installments. The danger has only increased, and since not much of this aspect got resolved in this story, there's much more to come. I can't wait.

I read 180 books in 2011, and I don't think I can really top that. I hope I can at least do that much again. Other than that, I want to just read what I want. I don't really like to challenge myself to certain kinds of books, or my TBR pile because that just makes reading stressful.

I did, however, join a few challenges this year that fit my "reading personality" therefore, I don't think I'll be stressing about them.

Two have to do with how MUCH I'm reading. I don't like to sign up for things that LIMIT the type of books I can read, but I did sign up for the Serial Killers Challenge, just because I know I will read some of those books this year!

Book Review: Madame Tussaud, by Michelle Moran

Readers interested in the French Revolution will find no better fiction than Madame Tussaud. Told from the perspective of Marie, an artist who creates lifelike was figures for her uncle's salon, this story immerses the reader into life during this horrific time in French history.

When I opened the book and saw a timeline, a map, and a list of characters, I was a bit put off. But, as I began to read, I really didn't use any of those things very much. The characters weren't introduced all at once, and I didn't have any difficulties keeping track. I did use the glossary of French terms in the back of the book, but most of those were understandable from the context of the writing also.

Some prominent figures in the orchestration of this revolution frequent the salon where Marie, her mother, and her "uncle" live and work. It is interesting to see throughout the developments how this family walks a fine line with respect to their politics. They try very hard to keep the revolutionaries as well as the royalists believing in their support. Marie is asked to teach wax modeling to Princesse Elisabeth, the king's sister, and in the process becomes acquainted with the King, Queen, and their children. She is also asked by the revolutionaries to make wax models of the infamous people who are beheaded.

I learned a lot about the French Revolution. I didn't realize how the King was kept in the dark about the true plight of the common people. He really had no idea how starved and destitute they were. He also had difficulty making decisions, and the Queen didn't try to sway him (I think she was smarter than he was.)

I didn't realize how much Lafayette and his friend Thomas Jefferson had to do with this revolution.

I don't mean to make light of war, but this revolution as depicted makes our U.S. Revolutionary War seem like a carnival. The brutality and wanton disregard for one's guilt or innocence is hard to comprehend. I've heard of Robespierre before, but had no idea what he became throughout this revolution (that he helped to initiate.) He wanted to overthrow the monarchy, but became so much worse than any king had ever been. I love when a book can entertain AND educate me. That's the reason historical fiction is really my favorite genre.

The settings were exquisitely done. I have been to Paris, and in particular Versailles, which I suppose helped me visualize some places, but I could feel the mud on my boots and see the blood in the streets. The beautiful gowns, the feasts, the jewels, as well as the descriptions of the prisons and the massacres were vivid.

I really cared about Marie and her family as the story went on. I rooted for their success.There's a love story too, and it is heartbreaking, but real. Some would say that Marie was a bit ruthless and unfeeling, but it worked well for her. She survived, which apparently tens of thousands of Parisians did not. She was obviously very intelligent.

The villains are richly portrayed as well--realistically, so that they aren't alway villainous. There is ambiguity and many disagreements between those who want to be rid of the king, but end up wanting all the power for themselves.

I loved this book, and will give it a high rating. But, realistically, it isn't for everyone. It's long and detailed. But it is very well written and easily kept my attention, so it is a must read for historical fiction lovers and especially fans of the French Revolution. Jennifer Donnelly's Revolution was my favorite book of 2010, and this one is an excellent companion.

Book Review: Skellig, by David Almond

Skellig is a sweet little book that defies description.

Michael has just moved to a new house, which his father is going to fix up for Michael, his mother, and his new baby sister. But when the baby gets very sick, everything changes.

While exploring the old rickety (and forbidden) garage, Michael discovers an old "man" who appears to be dead, but upon further inspection he is alive, but very weak and skinny.

Michael also meets his new neighbor, Mina, who is a very intelligent and inquisitive little girl. Michael decides to confide in Mina and together they try to take care of the "man/creature" whose name is Skellig. (Although at first, he tells them he is "Nothing.")

We never understand exactly what Skellig is. And, even though the story seems kind of dark and gothic, there's a sweetness as Michael feels a connection to his baby sister, Mina, and his parents. Can Skellig help his sister? Is she going to die? Almond also describes other connections to life, as Michael and Mina watch the baby black birds, and the owls.

It's a hard book to describe. I know this is somewhat of a classic children's book, but I didn't find it particularly memorable. It's very short, and written in short sentences, very simply, which is appropriate for its intended younger audience.

The audio was read by the author, and I liked his style. I felt like I was being read to. There's isn't a lot of emotion or inflection in his voice, but I thought it appropriate for this story.

Book Review: Racing the Devil, by Jaden Terrell

Racing the Devil offers everything desirable in a who-done-it mystery.

Jared McKean is an ex-cop-turned-PI who picks up a girl in a bar and wakes up accused of murdering a woman he's never met. As you can see, it doesn't take long for this book to grab you. Jared's prints, hair, and semen have been found in the murder victim's hotel room, along with a message on her cell phone. There are numerous entries in her calendar referring to Jared, making it seem like they've been having a relationship for several months.

After getting thrown in jail and beaten up, Jared finally is released on bail and can begin to clear his name. It's difficult when even your ex-partner doesn't believe in your innocence.

Terrell takes us through some interesting twists and turns, and I never suspected who the killer was until he/she was revealed. Along the way, we become attached to Jared and meet some other unique characters. Jared gets help from the victim's neighbor, and 80-year-old woman with intelligence and spunk. Jared lives with a gay friend who has aids, has an son with Down syndrome, a re-married ex-wife who is still very much in his life, and a teen nephew who appears to be into drugs and maybe more.

All of these characters come together to bring about a resolution for Jared. He's also a horse-lover, so that is an element of the story too.

There's a lot to the story in a few pages. It's a quick read that was hard for me to put down. The second Jared McKean Mystery, A Cup Full of Midnight, is due out in August, and I'l be anxious to get my hands on it. Jared is an interesting character involved in an exciting mystery. I won't hesitate to recommend this one.

I've read 180 books this year, which adds up to 56,790 pages. This is an average of about 156 pages per day. This doesn't include the pages of several I didn't finish and a couple of ebooks that didn't have page counts.

I had 20 books with a "5 Hat" rating (that's about 11%)

My average book rating was 3.6, which may seem high, but my lowest rated books got "2 Hats." If they were below that, they were a DNF and I didn't rate those.

I participated in one challenge this year -- the 350 Page Book Challenge. I read 61 books with over 350 pages. I didn't really set a goal, but I'm pretty happy with that total!

The first book I read was Linger, and I gave it a 5/5 rating! So, yes, I would definitely recommend it, although you need to read Shiver first.

My last book read is Racing the Devil. I really enjoyed this murder mystery and I rated it a 4/5. This is the first in a new detective series, and I'll recommend it, and look forward to the next one.

Book Review: Cinder, by Marissa Meyer

Cinder has a resilient main character and a plot that keeps moving, making the book difficult to put down.

Cinder is loosely based on the Cinderella fairy tale. There's a wicked step-mother, a prince who is having a ball, and Cinder isn't allowed to go to the ball. But there's a lot more to this story. Cinder is a cyborg -- part human but part mechanical parts since she had an accident when she was young. Cinder is also a mechanic who fixes all kinds of gadgets and technical things. The story takes place in a future "New Beijing" and Prince Kai brings his malfunctioning android for Cinder to fix.

There's a plague for which there is no cure that is killing many citizens, including the Emperor -- which means Kai will be taking over the throne. There is an international dispute between Queen Levana from Luna (the country on the moon) who wants to join their kingdoms by marrying the prince. Lunars (as they are called) have special powers to be able to influence others' minds. This makes it difficult for Kai to resist the Queen.

So, as you can see, there's no shortage of plot here. Meyer brings it all together in the end, and yes, by about 1/4 of the way through the book you have it figured out. But you just don't know all the details of how everything will be discovered, and the characters and details are unique enough to keep you reading.

This book is the first in a series, and given that we are left a bit hanging at the end, I can't wait for the rest of the story. I think teens who love a kick-ass heroine, some sci-fi techno details, and a fast-paced plot will be drawn to this one. I'll definitely be recommending it!

Book Review: Uncommon Criminals, by Ally Carter

If you enjoyed Heist Society, then you will surely want to add Uncommon Criminals to your list. Kat and her crew are at it again.

This time Kat and Hale and all of our favorite characters are trying to steal the Cleopatra Emerald. Well, of course, their intentions are noble, because this emerald was stolen from the tombs of Egypt, and Kat wants to return it.

Of course things go right, and then they go wrong, and then right again, as the plot twists and turns. And along the way we get to know Kat and Hale a little better, and perhaps the romance we have all been waiting for will begin -- perhaps??

The story is easy to read and follow. There's not much stopping of the action as we try to figure out just how this is going to be executed. The teens act older than teens but still have some youthful charm, and you will get so wrapped up that you will finish this one quickly.

I think you could read this one without reading the first book, Heist Society, by I'd still recommend reading them in order just to get the character backgrounds and to understand all the references made in Uncommon Criminals. Teens who enjoy heist books, a la Ocean's Eleven, should be directed to this series.

Book Review: Irises, by Francisco X. Stork

The beautiful characterizations are what makes Irises worth reading.

Kate (18) and her sister, Mary (16), have led a sheltered life in El Paso, Texas. Their father is a minister at a local church, and they have never had to make any decisions -- he has made all decisions for them. Their mother lives at home in a persistent vegetative state being kept alive by a feeding tube.

A visiting nurse comes in every day to check on things, but most of their mother's care is the responsibility of Kate and Mary. Kate has dreams of going to Stanford and becoming a doctor, and Mary is a very talented artist, but neither of them have been able to pursue their dreams since their mother's accident.

When their father dies suddenly, their world changes drastically. Suddenly they must move out of their house. They have little money and even though Kate gets a full scholarship to Stanford, where will Mary go? Who will take care of their mother?

Guiding these decisions are the girls' Aunt Julia, who comes to stay for a while and help out. Andy, the new pastor, is also involved. The minor characters contribute to the plot, but really Kate and Mary receive Stork's emphasis in this story.

They are wonderful characters, and well-written. They both change very much throughout the story, and these changes are slow, and subtle and totally believable. That's really what kept me reading. There isn't much of a plot here. The girls need to figure out what to do, and they do figure it out. It's the journey to these decisions and the growth of the characters that shines in this story.

I think this book has limited appeal to teens, but there are those that will identify with the story. Girls mostly, who enjoy stories about teens struggling to find their way and growing up as they do, will relate to this one.

Monday Memories: Night Before Christmas

Night Before Christmas, by Clement Clarke Moore

I am the youngest of four children, and I believe this book may have gone through all four of us. But I was the one that took a black marker and defaced the front cover (thank goodness I didn't scribble all over the inside.) I wrote my name, colored his eyebrows black, and outlined the title, as well as just generally scribbling over everything. I don't know why. I don't recall doing this to any other books. I have no idea what I was thinking. What's that weird face in the middle of his beard??? Both of my children have enjoyed this same book (they are both in their 20s now, so it's been around a while.) I love the illustrations, and I've included a picture of my favorite one. I loved that the book was shaped like Santa, and his hat on the cover, is fuzzy (and, yes, there is a bit of fuzz still left.)

I've been counting down my 12 favorite books of 2011, and today we are ready for #1. To clarify, these are book I READ in 2011; they weren't necessarily published in 2011. I have rated 18 books so far this year with a perfect 5 out of 5 hats. So my top twelve books were a bit difficult to determine. My #1 book of 2011 is:

Blood Red Road, by Moira Young

Click on the title to read my full review. I don't know where to begin with this book. I loved EVERYTHING about it. The characters, the dusty, bleak setting, the bad guys, the action, the love interest. Most of all, I loved the dialect. I think this is what made this book feel so real to me. It didn't bother me at all, and I felt like I was living this adventure with the characters because of this technique. From my review:

The plot moves rapidly and is very exciting, as Saba embarkson an epic journey to places she had no idea even existed. But what also iscompelling is the change in Saba. She becomes a warrior—tough and hard. Sherises to every challenge that comes her way, no matter how impossible the odds.She makes friends and enemies along the way, and each character is wellportrayed and important to the story.

Saba has a pet crow named Nero and you will fall in lovewith him. He’s an important character, and I totally believed in his abilities.Emmi, the younger sister, is totally frustrating. She never does what she’stold, and I really wanted to slap her several times. Jack is Saba’s romantichero, and he’s perfect too. I could go on and on about these wonderful characters.

This is apocalyptic and dystopian. It's an adventure and a thriller. It's a must read. For sure. I need some more from Moira Young....please???

Book Review: Everybody Sees the Ants, by A.S. King

A.S. King has done it again with Everybody Sees the Ants. Her characters just fill your heart. I want to be Lucky's mom. What an exceptional character.

Lucky has been bullied by Nader McMillan since he was seven years old, and no one will do anything about it. Nader's father is a powerful attorney whom everyone is scared to confront. Lucky's parents just want him to ignore it and move on.

When Lucky is dragged across the concrete floor by Nader and seriously injurred, his mother has had enough and they go on a three week trip to visit his aunt and uncle in Arizona. Lucky has a lot of time to grow and change, with the help of his aunt, his uncle, and a girl named Ginny.

Lucky is also on a mission to save his grandpa, who never came home from the Vietnam war. So he escapes to Vietnam to save his grandpa in his dreams.

It's hard to describe this book. The characters are quirky and the plot is a bit malleable. Much like Vera Dietz, the book is weird. It's not a straight-forward "this is what happened" story. But it's beautifully written, unputdownable, and won't let go of you for a long time.

Divergent, by Veronica Roth

Click on the title to read my full review. Divergent had one of the most colorful, kick-ass heroines that I've ever read. The book is action-packed, but still has enough interesting plotting to make the story real. From my review:

Roth writes characters that just jump off the page. My heartpounded right along with Tris, and I felt her pain as she made a decision abouther faction. All of the side characters brought out strong emotions – whetherhate, love, heartbreak, or tension. She really gets you inside all their heads.

For dystopian lovers this is a must read. And for those who aren't quite sure, this book might make you a believer. Give it a try.

I read a book called The Love Goddess' Cooking School, which took place on Blue Crab Island off the coast of Maine. I'd love the spend eternity in some place like that with friends like that. I know the popular answers will be Harry Potter, or some other paranormal settings, but I just want a normal, romantic place. Another one is Crystal Cove State Park in Moonglass or Bainbridge Island on Puget Sound in The Violets of March. All of those settings sound great to me!

Click on the title to see my full review.This is a series that each consecutive book got better than it's predecessor. Goliath just blew me away. I'm not big on illustrations in books either, but these are just stunning and mesmerizing. Some quotes from my review:

The twists and turns of the plot are creative, ending uptaking us pretty much all the way around the world, meeting famous (andinfamous) people, and experiencing an adventure at ever stop. The ending iscompletely tied up and doesn’t disappoint.

How Westerfeld depicted the Clankers’ machines and theDarwinists’ beasts is beyond my comprehension. I don’t know where he came upwith all this, but boy it is good stuff.

This series has wide appeal.. Girls and boys, historical, adventure, or science fiction lovers would all love these books. I can't see why anyone wouldn't love these books!

Book Review: The Unbecoming of Mara Dyer, by Michelle Hodkin

I fell victim to the "over-hype" when it comes to The Unbecoming of Mara Dyer. Don't get me wrong--I loved this book, but I was expecting a twisted, surprising premise, and I didn't get that.

Mara wakes in the hospital and finds out that she was with three of her friends when they were killed in a building collapse. Mara was the only one to survive, and she remembers nothing.

Mara suffers from PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder) and to assist her recovery her entire family (parents and two brothers) relocate to Florida. I found this a bit far-fetched, and really unnecessary to the plot. I don't think any mental health professional would suggest that a family needs to move across the country to deal with the trauma the Mara was experiencing. So, weird, but not important to my feelings about the book.

I loved Mara's character, and I thought her reactions and fears were very realistic. I liked how her older brother, Daniel, stuck up for her and helped her. I thought Noah was a bit strange, but that's part of the story. Jamie was a great character, and added a lot to Mara's experience. Too bad he disappears halfway through the book. I would have liked him to be a part of the entire story.

I guess what was most disappointing about this book is that I figured Mara out fairly early in the book. I kind of thought it was obvious what was going on. Noah was a surprise, however, so that helped.

The book is masterfully written so that it draws you in. I couldn't believe how fast those 450 pages went by. I was surprised by the twist at the end, and I'm in for another story. I need to find out what happens to Mara and Noah (and some other characters.)

I've been counting down my 12 favorite books of 2011, and today we are ready for #4. To clarify, these are book I READ in 2011; they weren't necessarily published in 2011. I have rated 18 books so far this year with a perfect 5 out of 5 hats. So my top twelve books were a bit difficult to determine. Book #4 is:

The Sky is Everywhere, by Jandy Nelson

Click on the title to read my full review. Let me just say, if you like contemporaries at all you have to read this. Some adjectives I used in my review: special, poetic, lyrical, beautiful, romantic. This is one of the few books that I used multiple quotes from in my review -- there were so many special things about it. The story is about loss and love. Here's a quote from my review:

They all are struggling in one way or another, and don’tseem to realize that they all need each other to get through this. Nelson tellsthis story as if she’s lived through it, with such compassion andunderstanding. One way Lennie has of working through her sadness is to writepoems on scraps of paper and then leave them in random places around town. Eachone of these poems is a work of art itself.

I don't know what else I can say, except just writing this makes me want to go get this and read it again. You really should.....
