My son was not a reader when he was little (he still isn't.) But, this book,
Officer Buckle and Gloria, by Peggy Rathmann, was a huge hit with him. We would read this OVER and OVER and he would belly laugh through the whole thing. That dog just cracked him up, and he couldn't get enough of it. This book won the Caldecott Medal, but at that point, I didn't even know what that was, and it's certainly not why I read the book to him!
