Blog Hopping -- Happy Independence Day!

Hope you all enjoy the 4th of July weekend, if you are in the states!

Jen, at Crazy For Books, asks this question for the hop this week:

What keeps you reading beyond the first few pages of a book, and what makes you want to stop reading a book and put it back on the shelf?

That's a good question, and kind of hard for me. I really think that it has a lot to do with the mood I'm in. If I'm not getting into a book, sometimes I put it down until a different time. Also, if things are moving very slowly and the book is overly descriptive. But there are exceptions to that, also. So, maybe if it's overly descriptive, but the writing is beautiful and lyrical, then that's OK. Also, if it's a historical fiction novel, I'm more patient because that is my favorite. It's mostly a mysterious thing, and sometimes I can't put my finger on it. Also, if it's written for younger kids and it's supposed to be funny -- sometimes I can't deal with the juvenile humor--I will set one down (I did this just recently...) I do have to say, I'm pretty patient and rarely don't finish a book.

Happy Reading! Thanks for stopping by and I hope you come back soon. I'm out of town this weekend, so it might be a while before I can comment on your posts.

  1. I rarely don't finish a book either. I can usually muddle through. I'd rather give the whole book a chance.

  2. Like you, I always try to finish the book even if I hate it. There have been only 2 DNFs in all my years as a reader.
    Happy Friday!
    Have a great weekend :)

  3. I don't know why I keep reading a book. It's not the story. It's not the characters. I really don't know!

I'm hopping by to tell you that I've got a wonderful giveaway going on at my blog, Readerbuzz. It's international! During the Readerbuzz July Giveaway I'll be giving away a $25 Amazon gift card! I'd love to have you stop in and throw your name in the hat to win!

  5. For me, it's easier to say what makes me stop reading than what keeps me reading. It's just something special that makes me keep turning the pages. Like you, overly descriptive text or characters that I just can't connect with often make me stop.

  6. I always try to finish as well. Even if I hate it. I finish. I can't really explain my reasoning behind it.

  7. Hopping through. I get irritated by juvenile humor too or crudeness. Although Swim the Fly was quite crude but it was so hilarious that I just adored it.

  8. Annette, I loved your answer to my question! I loved Jen's Vlog too (she's so brave).

You can view my answer here: http://cookiesbookclub.blogspot.com/2011/07/what-keeps-you-reading-crazy-for-books.html

For me it is about the writing more than anything, but relatable characters are a must too.

    Happy July 4th to you!

  10. I am your newest GFC follower.

    Answer to the question:

I started reading a book last month and it was suppose to be a very good book. But after giving it a couple of chapters I just couldn’t get into it. I put the book aside to read another day. I don’t like to do that because I feel as if my mind might have had too many distractions and I didn’t give the book a chance. So I always try to wait for another day to give it another go. I have so many other books calling to me from my to-be-read list that it can really be distracting. READ ME! READ ME!
I prefer reading and reviewing Christian Fiction but I do read a varity of other books. I just can’t handle too scary or gory. Suspense and Mysteries I like. No explicit adult books either if I do find one I really want to read I just skip over the x-rated stuff. So what genre do I read?
