Making a Difference: Which book(s) would you put in the hands of today's teenagers in hopes of making a difference in their lives?
This is what's great about YA contemporary fiction! First that comes to mind is Want to Go Private? which I haven't even read but everyone says ever teen should read it. Another one that gets mentioned often is Thirteen Reasons Why. Here are some others that I think could be highly recommended for teens:
Give a Boy a Gun or Shooter
Nineteen Minutes
Cut
Speak
Black and White
The Burn Journals
Love is the Higher Law or With Their Eyes
Such a Pretty Girl
The First Part Last
Inexcusable
The Kite Runner
Upstate
I'm sure as soon as I post this, I will think of some more that should be on this list. I don't have anything GLBT on this list -- and there needs to be, but I'm not sure what.

Q. If you could change the ending of any book (or series), which book would you choose? Why and to what?
Ummmm. I can think of a few individual books (Wolfsbane, Vanish, The Lying Game, to name a few recent ones) that I would like to actually HAVE HAD an ending, but I'm not sure about changing an ending. I'm sure there are a some books that I remember thinking Nnnoooooooo!!!! at the ending, but I can't think of one of them now. Even so, sometimes I still wouldn't change the end, even if I did have that reaction. There are books like Brother/Sister that have ambiguous endings, but those aren't all bad either. I guess I am willing to defer to the author, the "expert," and wouldn't want to presume that I know better than her/him.

Nice answers. It's really hard to think about how I would want a book to be different. But I totally agree that some books seem to lack an ending. They just run out of pages!

Even though Wolfsbane really, really annoyed me, I wouldn't change it. I would change the very end of Maggie Stiefvater's Forever though!

ReplyDeleteGreat post. I completely agree with what you said regarding book endings. I've found that books that are leading up to a sequel usually leave you with a really awkward ending. Only some authors can really pull it off.

Even though waiting for book three is horrible, I wouldn't want to change the end of Wolfsbane! At least if we're talking about the same one by Andrea Cremer. Lol!

I'm ashamed to admit that I've read very few of the books you listed on your TGIF post. It just goes to show how many good books are out there that can speak important messages to teens.
