Monday Memories: The Outsiders

Welcome to my meme, Monday Memories, where I feature favorite books we've loved from the past. You can link to an old review, or write something new about a beloved book from your past. Really, what's important is not the book, but why it is memorable to you. So, have fun reminiscing, and leave a comment below, so we can all enjoy your memories.

I also wanted to let you know about another wonderful blog that you should check out. Ashley @ Books from Bleh to Basically Amazing does a weekly post called Memory Monday. She has been posting about her childhood memories of books. What's great about Ashley's site is that she is asking for guest posts for her Memory Monday event!  So hop on over there and check it out.

This was required reading in high school (they sometimes read it in middle school now.) I was a "trashy adult romance" novel reader. I had never read anything like this. It was edgy! It was about teens and it was exciting. There was some conflict, and violence, and TEEN romance. I loved this book. Can't say that about many of my "required reads" in school. Even more impressive that it was written by a teenager -- and S.E. is a GIRL!!! I think this book was less than ten years old when I read it (it was published in 1967), and it was really a step outside the box for a high school reading assignment. I can imagine -- some teachers loved teaching this novel (and I'm sure some hated it.) This one, as many books do, brings back fond memories....

Share one of your cherished book memories!

You can do a Monday Memories post on your blog. Copy my button and link back here, so others can see all the other posts.  Leave a comment below with the link to your post.

  1. I LOVED The Outsiders! This was by far the coolest book we had to read in school (I was in middle school). I thought all of the characters were SO cool. Oh gosh, and then I discovered the movie version! What a nice looking cast :D

  2. I've never actually read The Outsiders. I wish we would have read it in school, but it wasn't required reading for our district. I picked it up a couple of years ago with every intention of reading it, but it still sits on my book shelf. Maybe I'll finally get to it in 2012.

  3. I was in my 30's when I first read this and I loved it. Still do. Great choice Annette

  4. This was and still is a popular choice as a Grade 8 novel study in my area. I read it in Grade 8 and taught it to 8s as well. It's amazing how much it still resonates with young people.
