Why I Skipped the Weekend

Didn't do my usual posting, reading or commenting over the weekend because I was attending our AWESOME Illinois School Library Media Association annual conference!
School Libraries: The Core of Student Success

I saw several excellent presentations. First of all, our keynote speaker on Friday night was Tim Green. He's an excellent speaker and a really nice guy. I highly recommend him if you are looking for an author to come to your school.

Then, Saturday morning, we heard Sharon Draper, and she is awesome too! She also had a breakout session where she talked about all of her books. I can't wait to read her new book, Panic.

For our Saturday keynote, we enjoyed The Mighty Little Librarian, Tiffany Whitehead. She has great, cutting-edge thoughts on being a school librarian. I highly recommend following her blog and twitter (@librarian_tiff)

I always attend Michael Cart's presentation on the Best of the Best in High School literature. He's at our conference every year, and I always come home with a huge list of books to buy for the library. We had sessions about technology, the Common Core, literature, and many other topics.

The best part for me is networking with librarians from all over the state who I've become friends with and usually only get to see each year during conference. Librarians have great ideas, and they love to share. The ISLMA conference is always a very worthwhile experience.

2014 Reader's Choice Award Nominees Announced

In Illinois, our reader's choice award for teens is called The Abraham Lincoln Illinois High School Book Award and it is sponsored by the Illinois School Library Media Association, of which I am a proud board member. I did also sit on the committee to select books for the Lincoln list in years past, so this award is near and dear to my heart.

The list for 2014 was announced Friday, and I'm very exited about it. I think it's a great list! I have no idea which book will win.  Here are the nominees:

What do you think? I've read all but three of these. I'm not sure which one I would vote for at this point.

Voting is open for the 2013 Abe Lincoln High School Book Award. I'll let you know which one wins next month. Here's a link to the 2013 Nominees. (Also a great list!)

I'm Off to the ISLMA Conference!

2012 Conference
October 18 - 20, 2012
Pheasant Run Resort
St. Charles, IL

The Illinois School Library Media Association conference starts today. I will be leaving this afternoon and spend the next two days in Librarian Heaven! I love getting to network with other school librarians and the sessions are always great. We have Doug Johnson giving a keynote address. Joyce Valenza will also be speaking.  And a bunch of authors, including Christ Barton, Tom Lichtenheld, James Sturm, Andrew Arnold, Alexis Frederic-Frost, and Mathew Cody will be there. Mostly lower grade authors, but that's OK.

I will probably be a little sparse in the blogosphere -- I can't stay totally away, but I'll be tending to other things. I'll fill you in when I get back.

Have a great weekend!
