Feature & Follow Friday - Hyped Books

Happy Friday everyone! Hope you have a great weekend. Today, our question from Parajunkee and Alison is:

What hyped up book do you think was not worth all the talk?

This is a hard question for me, because in choosing a book for this question, I rely on my personal opinion. Just because a book wasn't my thing, doesn't mean it isn't a great book for other people.

So, with that said, my choice is The Iron King by Julie Kagawa. Here's my thoughts on DNFing this book There's nothing wrong with the writing or world building or anything. I loved Kagawa's Immortal RulesI just knew going in that fantasy is one of my least favorite genres, and this book was just to "fantastical" for me. I don't know why. For example, I enjoyed Daughter of Smoke & Bone, despite all it's weird creatures. I think a fantasy book has to have roots in reality -- on Earth, or some Earth-like place -- or I won't enjoy it. I felt like The Iron King was going to stay in a fantasy world for way too long.
It also has to do with mood. I tell myself I just wasn't in the mood for a fantasy and that some day I'll pick The Iron King up again. But realistically, with a TBR that contains 100s of books, am I going to ever read it again? If I'm honest, it's unlikely.

I don't mind the hype that books receive. I read a lot of hyped books. Most of them deserve it, in my opinion. There are also great books that don't get the hype they deserve, so I try to review those and do what I can for them.

I really feel guilty when I don't like a hyped book. Or, I feel like there's something wrong with me. Do you feel that way too?

  1. I hate it when I read a hyped up book and it lets me down. Few would share my opinion so it's hard to talk to them about it.

  2. But I though this was a good book? Actually scratch good and replace it with awesome. Oh well :)

  3. Just goes to show how egotistical I can be because if I don't like something that gets a lot of hype I am more likely to think there is something wrong with everybody else before I think that there is something wrong with me!
I swiped this book from a friend who was getting ready to get rid of it over a year ago and have yet to even attempt to read it.

  4. The Golden Compass was one I didn't like but everyone else seemed to love. I also could not get through Going Bovine by Libba Bray, but loved her other books.

  5. You're right Annette, I feel a little guilty too - Shiver was my choice, but as I said, we can't all like the same books. I tried Iron King, but it wasn't the right timing for me. I will try it again though, as it is definitely my kind of book.

  6. I agree, I didn't like The Iron King at all and I felt bad because everybody else did but I didn't. I just don't get what all the hype about the series is about. New follower :)

  7. I haven't read this one yet, but I had definitely planned on it! But I feel that way too! Like something is wrong with me. Sometimes when I feel like I won't finish a book that everyone else likes, I feel like I should try a little harder to get into it or that I just haven't gotten to the good part yet. Thanks for stopping by!

  9. I do think that sometimes. Why do I not like it when it's clear everyone else does? - that must mean there is something wrong with me! But I try to stop myself from thinking like that. We all just have different tastes.
I still haven't read the Iron Fey series, it's on my pile. :D

  11. New follower through GFC as lucyatmax/no pic.....Please visit/follow me at bethartfromtheheart.blogspot.com . I don't read books based on the hype. I try to select from the storyline and plot on the back of the bookand if it interests my personal taste. However, on a rare occasion a great cover speaks to my eyeballs and then I can be wickedly deceived. I'm getting smarter with that.
Nice to have met through FF,

  12. Thanks so much for all of your reasons why you thought this one didn't deserve the hype... as a potential reader, it's more valuable to know the "why it didn't live up to its hype" rather than just "Eh, it didn't do it for me."

    Thanks so much!
