Hourglass is more than a time travel book. It has unique elements of paranormal activity which make this an engaging story.
Emerson sees people from the past. These people just occur randomly and will disappear if Emerson tries to touch them. She’s had a rough time since her parents died. She’s been attending a boarding school, but will now stay with her brother and his wife and attend a local school for her senior year of high school. After her parents died, Em spent time in a mental hospital to get over their death as well as try to get rid of her “hallucinations.” She was heavily medicated, but recently has gone off her meds, and now is having these visions again.
Her brother, Thomas, has always tried to find people to help Em. The latest person, Michael, is different than the usual counselors. He’s only a couple of years older than Em, and he’s hot! There’s a certain magnetism as soon as Em is introduced to Michael. Something draws her to him.
It turns out, Michael is more than he seems. He works for an organization called Hourglass, and all of these people have certain kinds of supernatural abilities. Michael can see people from other time periods too, and he tries to convince Em that she’s not crazy. Emmerson learns to trust Michael, and slowly more and more is revealed about her abilities, as well as her past, and even her future. There’s a dangerous task for which Michael needs Emmerson’s help. Things get more and more complicated, and the task becomes more and more difficult. Not to mention that it seems apparent that Emmerson and Michael are soul mates, destined to be together. Should they risk their lives and happiness to save others?
I loved the world building and McEntire’s explanations of how all the supernatural powers worked together. I believed it all. I’m surprised that Em’s brother was so supportive and believed all of this crazy stuff, but it was nice that she had some authority figures in her life that she trusted. There were plenty of unexpected plot twists to keep this story going, and the forbidden romance aspect was enjoyable. Some of the secondary characters were somewhat extraneous, but there weren’t so many that I couldn’t keep track.
This is going to be popular with both girls and boys who like a supernatural story that borders on science fiction. And, hot, steamy Michael doesn’t hurt the book either (especially for the girls.)
