Book Review: Clarity, by Kim Harrington

Clarity is an entertaining novel filled with lively teen characters and a little bit of a paranormal element. I’m always looking for a good teen mystery, and I have found another one in Clarity.

Clarity Fern, or Clare as she is called, has a psychic ability. She can see, hear, or feel events that have left an imprint on the objects she touches. Her mother and her brother, Perry, also have psychic abilities. This is their family business. They do readings in their home on Cape Cod for the tourists visiting their town. Clarity has no friends, because the local teens think she is a freak.

When a teenage tourist is murdered, business gets bad for the Ferns. But that’s not the worst of their problems. It seems Perry was the last person to see the victim alive, at a late-night hook up in her hotel room.  Detective Toscano is new to the town, and the mayor asks him to let Clarity use her special abilities to assist the investigation. Toscano isn’t happy about the arrangement, so he assigns his son, Gabriel, to work with Clare.

The plot takes many twists and turns, and I really didn’t figure out who the perpetrator was until it was revealed. There’s danger, excitement, intrigue, and some romance to round out the enjoyment.  Harrington’s writing is simple. It’s not eloquent or beautiful, but it’s an easy, quick read, and we all need that once in a while. The teen characters were believable for the most part, although a few times they went over the top, but all for the sake of the plot.

I thought the cover, while pretty, was a bit misleading. This book read more like a light-hearted, fun, mystery/romance. I didn’t really ever feel like the psychic abilities were all that sinister, or even that they added that much to the story. There was an opening left for more stories about Clarity, and I’d be all over that. I will recommend Clarity to teens who enjoy a fun mystery/romance.
