Monday Memories - The Wizard of Oz

Welcome to my meme, Monday Memories, where I feature favorite books we've loved from the past. You can link to an old review, or write something new about a beloved book from your past. Really, what's important is not the book, but why it is memorable to you. So, have fun reminiscing, and leave a comment below, so we can all enjoy your memories.

I also wanted to let you know about another wonderful blog that you should check out. Ashley @ Books from Bleh to Basically Amazing does a weekly post called Memory Monday. She has been posting about her childhood memories of books. What's great about Ashley's site is that she is asking for guest posts for her Memory Monday event!  So hop on over there and check it out.

When I was young, there were not videos or DVDs. I know, hard to believe there are people still alive who lived back then. So, if we wanted to watch a movie, say The Wizard of Oz, it was shown about once a year, and we would watch the TV listings carefully (no cell phone reminders!) to see when it would be shown so we could watch it . Again. Every year. We loved this movie, and really, doesn't everyone?

When I realized The Wizard of Oz was a book, I wanted to read it. This was my first encounter with how different the two mediums could be! The book was so different, and let's face it -- the music is the best part of that movie.  I liked the book, but it was quite a shock to my young mind. If you are curious, here's a post about the differences between the movie and the book. One of my early lessons about literature....

What books or reading experiences taught you some important lessons about literature?

  1. Oh Annette, I was shocked too at how different they were! Especially that the book was violent. I probably would have had nightmares if I read it when I was little ..I'm a scaredy cat. ;)
