Book Review: Ten, by Gretchen McNeil @GretchenMcNeil

I really enjoy a book that makes me feel genuine suspense, and Ten is one of those books.

From page one, there's a feeling of doom. It is storming - ferociously. The teen's parents don't know where they are. And, where they are is on a remote island, with very little population, and no way off except by ferry -- and the ferry doesn't come back for three days. What could possibly go wrong?

Meg is the main character, and Ten is told from her perspective. This is a violent book. McNeil doesn't hold back. There are gruesome murders. The pace never stops -- one after the other, teens are being murdered. I stayed up way past my bedtime to finish Ten.

The atmosphere is vividly described -- I think my palms were sweating before I finished. The teen characters are typical. Some popular, some "wanna be's," athletes, artists, and each character distinct. There's the typical hook-ups, relationships, and romance that throwing 10 teens together would instigate.

The way the motive comes together is very creative and unusual, and I didn't figure it out before it was revealed. Plenty of red herrings, and I fell for them.

I loved this book for what it is. I can't think of many YA books with this macabre premise, and I can't wait to push Ten to my teens (actually, I already have, even before I read it.) One of our English classes reads And Then There Were None, and some of those students have enjoyed reading this for comparison. I, however, have never read the Christie -- but it's on my list now.

  1. I've never read any of Christie's mysteries either, but I would like to. I think this would make a great Halloween/suspense reading choice. I plan to read it soon. So glad you enjoyed it!
